I think the elitist mentality is because most of us who own new Ducati's (yes I have an 848 as well) understand the potential of them and wish people would be more open minded. We've all ridden Japanese bikes, even I have owned one. But most of us have zero experience taking bike X and ringing its neck out on the track where it belongs, then comparing the results.
Ohh and my 749R race bike is lighter the my 848. Its nowhere near stock...
