Default ST4S fairing rubber barrel attachment nuts

I pulled the fairing, left and right side panels off and found a couple of the rubber attachement nuts are in pretty bad shape. I had a spare and tried to push the flared end through the small hole and found it to be nearly impossible? How do you replace these? I tried to push through with a small screwdriver and buggered it up, tore the rubber a bit. I tried pulling through with small needlenose pliers and stretched the rubber shoulder and tore it some more.

How do you thread these guys through the small hole!!

thanks
