Well, in my day, I remember when motorcycle racers used to spend many months designing their own bikes and then even more months wandering the streets collecting scrapmetal to cast their own engine parts and they would actually build the bikes on the night before race-day. Practice? Nooo, none of that! Safety? Not much of that either. Helmets? The lucky ones were sometimes able collect old cast iron cooking pots and use these as helmets but the tracks then were not much more than goat tracks, which caused the cast iron 'helmets' to bounce violently up and down on their heads resulting in brain damage to many of them but they always fought hard and with happy smiles right to the finish-line.
After the race, the brain-damaged riders would gather together with their prizes of stale beer and cheerfully beat each other up. Now you tell that to people these days and they wont believe you....
