Vent line isn't
that critical that it needs to be on the tank, however, the OVERFLOW line is. If the overflow line isn't on, and your bike happens to spit fuel out that vent, due to a full tank, heat expansion, sloshing around, etc.....it's going all over the hot rear cylinder/pipe of the engine.
If you thought the bike felt hot between your legs in the summer NOW......wait until that happens.
I'd still attach the vent line though. Considering that it allows the tank to "breath" and not implode with the suction of the fuel pump, it may also vent gas vapors on or around the engine, and you want that directed to another area, like below the bike.
