I had a '99 M750 prior to my current SS. Quick, easy and (relatively) inexpensive upgrades that will make a huge difference are Keihin Flatslide Carbs, lightweight flywheel, upgraded wires/plugs and lower gearing. None of these require cracking into a perfectly good engine. You should be able to get all these from Chris at http://www.ca-cycleworks.com.
