If you compare all the models, not just the 1000ss you will find that everything went up by the same 9% hp, this is due to the change from wheel to crank hp. All the models lost weight as well, from the difference in the way they measured..wet vs dry.

I have a 2004 1000ss it is exactly the same as a 2003, and a 2005. Just the serial number is different. Bikes that were made in 2004 at the factory can be sold as 2005s with a serial number that says it is a 2005. Then shipped to a dealer.
