I had used an open cover for awhile, but my clutch is nearing the end of its life (getting pretty loud..even for me!), so I put the stock cover on. Here's what I found:
The open cover seems to keep the clutch cooler in hot temps, and allows dust to blow right out. The stock cover keeps all that carbon dust inside, and you have to blow it out frequently in order to keep it working smoothly like the open cover allows.
There is no real worry about getting crud in your clutch unless you go through a mud pit.. The only extra you might want to invest in is stainless springs and bolts ($30), as they will rust over time.
