Don't let a little cam chain noise scare you away. Very easy and straightforward fix. Even replacing the cam chain is very easy on that model if needed. Stock tensioners had problems when the bikes were ridden real hard. Toss the stock tensioner and get an APE Manual tensioner...........$55....... Problem solved. That year 1000 was an excellent bike........I owned 2 of them and a couple of 02's which were the same bike basically. 40,000 miles with nothing major....just the usual wear parts and i did have to replace a regulator/rectifier once. If the deal is good.....I'd do it. If the bike is straight and not all thrashed....and at least runs halfway decent...you probably wont get hurt.
