The 900SS is a great bike - I have a 1999 with 35K miles and NO reliability issues in all that time.
Not sure if I'd pay the asking price, but remember it IS a new bike... sort of. It's not like you're paying 8K for a 7 year old used bike with 30K miles on it - it's zero mileage. However, if you do make him an offer be sure to get the belts changed before you even start it up.
